Why Does Ice Float On Water?

It is common for us to observe ice cubes floating when placed in a glass of water, and icebergs floating on the surface seas and oceans. However, this is a peculiar behavior as solid matter usually sinks in liquid. But why does ice float on water? In fact, why does anything float at all?

Ice floats on top of water because it has a lower density. Density is a substance’s mass per unit volume. Because ice crystals take up more space than liquid water, they have a higher volume and a lower density.

What Makes Something Float?

An object floats when the weight force on the object is balanced by the upward push of the water on the object. The upwards push of the water increases with the volume of the object that is under water; it is not affected by the depth of the water or the amount of water.

If the weight force down is larger than the upward push of the water on the object then the object will sink. If the reverse is true then the object will rise – rising is the opposite of sinking.

Different objects float at different levels in the water because as most regular objects are lowered into the surface of water, the upward push of the water steadily increases until it is in balance with the weight force of the object, and the object then continues floating at this level with the two forces in balance.

Many objects that are hollow (and so generally contain air) float because the hollow sections increase the volume of the object (and so the upwards push) for very little increase in weight force down. However, it is not necessary for an object to contain air in order to float.

No object can float without some part of it being below the surface of the water.

What Makes Ice Less Dense Than Liquid Water?

Water reaches its maximum density at 4°C (40°F). As it cools further and freezes into ice, it actually becomes less dense. On the other hand, most substances are most dense in their solid (frozen) state than in their liquid state. Water is different because of hydrogen bonding.

Ice is less dense than water because in ice the molecules arrange themselves in a rigid tetrahedral structure due to which cage like spaces remain in their bonding. But water molecules remain in linear bonding form. As the volume of ice becomes greater, it is less dense.

Ice always floats because it is less dense than regular water. Because frozen water molecules form a crystal, they take up more space and have a lower density than regular liquid water. But keep in mind that ice might not always float in other fluids, like air, alcohol, etc.

Understanding The Reason Behind This

Water is made up of 2 atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. The slightly negatively charged oxygen atom of a water molecule is attracted towards the positively charged hydrogen atoms of neighboring water molecules, giving rise to weak hydrogen bonds between them.

In the liquid state, all the water molecules are loosely held together and are free to move. On cooling, the molecules try to come closer, increasing the density.

However, once the temperature drops below 4oC, the repelling nature of negative oxygen atoms of the neighboring molecules prevents them from coming any closer.

That is when its density starts to fall. As it reaches the solid state (ice), the hydrogen bonds become stable and arrange themselves in such a way that the adjacent oxygen atoms are spread far apart from each other, leaving a lot of space between the molecules. This causes ice to have a higher volume and lesser density than water, making it float.

However, not all water ice floats on regular water. Ice made using heavy water, which contains the hydrogen isotope deuterium, sinks in regular water. Hydrogen bonding still occurs, but it’s not enough to offset the mass difference between normal and heavy water. Heavy water ice sinks in heavy water.
